General Practice statement

Sarah combines a unique mix of both employment and criminal law in her busy practice as a specialist barrister. She is able to accept instructions under the public direct access scheme, and spends a percentage of her practice time on pro bono cases from the Western Circuit Free Representation Unit, or the Bar Pro Bono Unit schemes. Sarah is a skilled advocate who deals well with clients from all walks of life, and is well liked in the Exeter area by local solicitors.

 

Employment

Introduction

Sarah acts for both Claimant and Respondent clients in all areas of employment law including (but not limited to) unfair/wrongful dismissal, whistle blowing, all types of discrimination cases under the Equality Act 2010 and the previous legislation (if applicable). She accepts instructions on a privately paid or conditional fee agreement basis. Sarah is available to advise in conference or in writing, to draft documents and/or to provide representation at hearings in the Employment Tribunal, Employment Appeals Tribunal, or Court of Appeal.

Current and recent work

Having specialised in this area of law since completion of her pupillage, Sarah’s achievement in this field was recently marked by her appointment as Junior Counsel to the Crown on the Regional Panel for Employment Law in October 2010. She continues to represent individuals and large corporate clients alike as well as her Government based work for the Crown. Sarah is well known locally (by Judges and instructing solicitors) as having a skilled yet pragmatic and fair approach to her cases.

 

Crime

Introduction

Sarah acts for both the prosecution and Defence in a wide range of criminal matters ranging from traffic to fraud and dishonesty to violence offences. She has experience in Magistrates & Crown Courts as well as in the Court of Appeal. Sarah also undertakes cases involving regulatory crime and has a wide experience in prison law, including prison adjudications and parole board hearings. She accepts instructions whether legally aided or privately paid.

Current and recent work

Sarah has practiced Crime throughout her career at the Bar and has been recognised as a level 2 Prosecutor by the Crown Prosecution Service since 2007. Sarah is a robust opponent who is well respected locally by other members of the Bar, the Judiciary, and those who instruct her; and she has an excellent track record of trial results.

An affiliate member of the Devon and Somerset Law Society and member of the Education and Training sub-Committee.

Sarah has written many articles for the chambers newsletter and is currently the editor of the Western Circuiteer.

 

Seminars

Sarah is regularly asked to be a guest speaker at seminars organised by third parties, such as the Exeter Chamber of Commerce and local firms of solicitors, on a wide range of employment law issues. She is also a key part of the regular seminar programme offered by Rougemont for ILEX and other local legal groups needing CPD training- please contact the clerks for details of forthcoming topics and events.

 

Outside Interests

Leader of the Exeter Group of the Lawyers' Christian Fellowship.

Horse riding, canoeing, skiing, camping and travelling, and walking the dog with her husband.
