Recruitment and selection process
All applications shall be considered by no less than two members of Chambers' Pupillage and Membership Committee, whereby a shortlist of candidates to be interviewed would be compiled. Applications for pupillage are considered purely on merit, with particular focus being applied to the following factors:
- academic merit;
- non-academic achievement;
- evidence of personal and professional motivation;
- professional and non-professional experience; and
- evidence of necessary skills and professional aptitude;
Chambers' selection and recruitment policies are implemented in a manner that is fair, based on merit and non-discriminatory. Chambers invites applications from all sections of society. Such factors as age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion and belief, sex or sexual orientation shall not be considered at any stage of the selection and recruitment process.
Selection criteria shall be formalised prior to applications being considered.
Applicants who are successful at the short listing stage will be invited to attend an interview in Chambers. The interview stage comprises a formal interview, the completion of a written assignment and an advocacy exercise. In exceptional circumstances, there may be a second round of interviews on a subsequent date. Thereafter, the interview panel will consider the performances of the applicants and, if deemed appropriate, will make an offer of pupillage; Chambers reserves the right to make any such offer subject to receipt of satisfactory references. All interviewed applicants will receive written notice of the outcome of the selection process. Unsuccessful applicants may request written feedback pertaining to their performance, only if they reached the interview stage of the selection process.
Duties of the pupil
Pupillage must be registered with the BSB in the prescribed manner prior to the commencement of pupillage, and ideally no later than two weeks prior to that date. It is the responsibility of the pupil to ensure that this requirement is satisfied. The Pupillage Handbook should be consulted for information as to the prescribed method of registration.
It should be noted that pupils must have been called to the Bar before commencement of pupillage.
It shall be the duty of the pupil to ensure that his/her pupillage is registered with the Bar Standards Board no less than two weeks prior to the commencement of pupillage. The pupil should consult the Bar Standards Board website, Pupillage Handbook or Chambers'
A pupil will be assigned to a pupil supervisor, the identity of the pupil supervisor may change during the course of pupillage at the sole discretion of Chambers.
It shall be the joint responsibility of the pupil and pupil supervisor to ensure that the pupil successfully works through the Pupillage Checklist as may be in amended from time to time. The pupil and pupil supervisor shall work together to ensure compliance with an relevant pupillage requirements imposed from time to time by the Bar Standards Board and the Bar Council. The pupil is, however, require to take initiative and ensure that appropriate progression is maintained and raise any material issues promptly with the pupil supervisor.
The pupil is required to effect his/her registration as a data controller with the Information Commissioner prior to the commencement of his/her second six months of pupillage. The registration fee shall not be reimbursed by Chambers.
During the first six months of pupillage, a pupil will be required to undertake such work as might reasonably be required by his/her pupil supervisor. Generally, this will include written work, attending court, conferences and negotiations. During the second six months of pupillage, the pupil will also be provided with instructions for work in his/her own name, subject of course to the forgoing regarding the allocation of work.
Whilst in both the first and second six months of pupillage, pupils are expected and encouraged to work with all members of Chambers and produce work for those individuals when reasonably required to do so - the allocation of any such work must first be agreed by the pupil supervisor. If the pupil is not in court or otherwise engaged in appointments with members of Chambers, (s)he shall be present in Chambers. However if agreed otherwise and in any event during all working times, the pupil must be readily contactable by Chambers. At all relevant times, the pupil must ensure that his/her pupil supervisor and Chambers' clerking team are aware of his/her whereabouts.
Duties of the pupil supervisor
In addition to the forgoing and for the avoidance of doubt, the pupil supervisor shall:
- at all times be aware of pupillage curriculum requirements and ensure that the pupil is provided with adequate resources, time and support to satisfy these requirements and in particular, ensure compliance wit the requirements and guidance as set out in the Pupillage Handbook and appendices thereto, as amended form time to time;
- monitor the level and nature of work being undertaken by the pupil and ensure that the pupil receives a broad experience of working for all members of Chambers, where appropriate. All work undertaken by the pupil for other members of Chambers shall be monitored and considered by the pupil supervisor;
- provide informal feedback to the pupil as to his/her performance, progress and conduct on an ongoing basis;
- provide formal feedback to the pupil on a monthly basis, with feedback being provided to members of Chambers on a quarterly basis;
- liaise with Chambers' clerking team to ensue that the pupil receive a structured and practical experience of practice;
- ensure that the pupil is reimbursed for all expenses reasonably incurred in the performance of his/her duties, which for the avoidance of doubt shall not include expenses arising out of travel, purchasing stationery, or maintaining necessary legal library subscriptions.
Distribution of work (second six months of pupillage)
Pupils are expected to perform a variety of work during the second six months of pupillage, where available, and will be provided with such work as is necessary to satisfy the requirements of the Pupillage Checklist. The pupil supervisor together with Chambers' clerking team shall oversee the work that the pupil is allocated and ensure that those requirements are satisfied.
The allocation of work to pupils is entirely at the discretion of Chambers and the pupil shall not be entitled to receive an equal distribution of work when considered alongside members of Chambers. If there is more than one pupil in Chambers at a given time, work shall be allocated fairly between those pupils, with regard to the nature and variety of work and the income received by the pupils. If the pupil is concerned by an issue pertaining to either the allocation or nature of work undertaken, (s)he should discuss in the first instance those concerns with his/her pupil supervisor. If a pupil is unsatisfied with the outcome, or otherwise wishes to discuss the matters with someone other than the pupil supervisor, the grievance procedure should be followed.
Pupils are entitled to undertake devilling, subject to the prior approval of the pupil supervisor. Pupils will not generally be paid to undertake such work, however any such agreement between a member of Chambers and the pupil is a private matter for those individuals.
During the first six months of pupillage, pupils receive from Chambers a non-refundable grant of £6,000, to be paid in equal monthly instalments, each instalment to be paid at the end of the month. The pupil will not be required during this period to make any financial contributions to Chambers.
During the second six months of pupillage, the pupil will receive from Chambers a guaranteed minimum income of £6,000, which will be paid monthly in arrears to supplement income during that period. During the second six months of pupillage, the pupil shall pay clerking fees, to be calculated by reference to receipts received during that period. The terms of such payments shall be confirmed to the pupil upon the offer of pupillage being made.
Applications for tenancy
Pupillage is offered with a view to tenancy. Pupils wishing to apply for tenancy should submit a written application, comprising covering letter, a portfolio of written work and any references obtained, during the final two months of pupillage.
The selection of pupils for tenancy shall be based entirely upon Chambers' requirements at the time of the application being received and shall consider in particular the pupil's performance and talent; conduct; and relationships with members of Chambers. Such factors as age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion and belief, sex or sexual orientation shall not be considered.
The decision as to whether or not a pupil shall be offered tenancy within Chambers, will be determined by a majority vote of the members of Chambers. The decision shall be communicated to the pupil as soon as reasonably practicable, and in any event shall be communicated no later than the two weeks subsequent to the receipt of the application.
Unsuccessful applicants for tenancy may, at the sole discretion of the Head of Chambers and upon an application being made by the pupil, be invited to squat in Chambers for a period of time whilst making alternative arrangements. Chambers would confirm the terms of such an arrangement upon such an application being received and acceded to.
Grievance and complaints process
In the first instance, pupils should address concerns or queries with their pupil supervisor. However, Chambers has in place a grievance policy, which pupils are invited to utilise should they so desire. A copy of the policy shall be obtained from Chambers' clerking team.
Chambers has in place an Equality and Diversity Policy, which is implemented and observed by all of Chambers' activity. Any matters of enquiry or concern, should be directed to Chambers' Equality and Diversity Officer, Mrs Sarah Hornblower. A copy of the policy shall be obtained from Chambers' clerking team.
What is Mini-Pupillage?
Chambers' prides itself on its commitment to the education of aspiring members of the Bar and welcomes applicants who demonstrate the potential to secure pupillage. We are able to provide successful applicants with an opportunity to sit with our barristers and to gain useful experience of life in Chambers.
Rougemont invites applications from talented and determined individuals pursuing a career at the Bar. Whilst it is not a prerequisite to pupillage, we recommend that anyone who intends to apply for pupillage with Rougemont first completes a mini-pupillage.
What does Mini-Pupillage involve?
We aim to provide our mini-pupils with a balanced experience, which generally includes observing a range of court hearings; attending client conferences and negotiations; and undertaking written work and research.
Chambers considers applications for mini-pupillage from talented individuals who have commenced study for a qualifying law degree or who have studied or are studying on the GDL/CPE, BVC or BPTC courses.

Applicants should please note that no documents other than the application form will be considered when assessing applications, so there is no need to attach CVs, references or detailed cover letters.
