Equalities and Diversity Policy

Rougemont Chambers demonstrates a commitment to equal opportunities throughout all aspects of the practise.

We follow the Bar Council Code of Conduct regarding non-discrimination in the acceptance of work, carrying out work dealing with our members, staff, clients and professional associates. Our Equal Opportunities policy is embedded within the practise, within our recruitment procedures and is reflected in any advertising materials. All new joiners are instructed in this policy at induction and commit to complying with this policy.

Policy statement
Equal treatment will be given to anyone who comes into contact with or works within Chambers – this includes any clients, clerks, members, job applicants, pupils, other employees and suppliers. They will not be discriminated against and will have the same opportunities regardless of race, colour, nationality, sex, age, marital status, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or disability.

Chambers supports this policy with the following positive actions:

  1. Promotions are based solely on merit. Evidence of merit is documented and promotions are open to challenge and scrutiny.
  2. New positions are advertised with the clear statement that Rougemont Chambers operate an equal opportunities policy
  3. Rougemont Chambers aims to employ a diverse mix of members and ensures that equal opportunities are given throughout the recruitment, development and promotions processes.
  4. Selection of pupils and door tenants is informed by this policy.
  5. Any allegation of discrimination is dealt with as a matter of urgency and disciplinary action will be taken where necessary following investigation of the grievance by Head of Chambers.
  6. A named officer will be responsible for ensuring the policy is communicated and adhered to.
  7. The clerks will offer work equally to members with the necessary skills and experience and will take the necessary action under the Bar Code of Conduct should any professional client seek to unfairly influence the use of a particular barrister or decline to use a barrister on discriminatory grounds.

Rougemont Chambers is committed to keeping this policy up to date, visible (in the form of posters and leaflets), embedded within induction and adhered to.
Rougemont Chambers contributes to the Legal Services Commissions monitoring of equal opportunities.
